My Workstation Needs Help

I’ve always admired designer’s workspaces. They seem to be so inspiring and artistic and fresh out of a magazine. I really wanted mine to be like that. But of course with hoarding tendencies, a toddler and this annoying clingy friend called laziness, that didn’t at all happen.

You guys may wonder how I work and what my “home office” looks like. Well, here it be and prepare for a shock. It’s so not pretty. And I need someone to help me redesign and organize it. When this will miraculously occur, I have no idea.

I was proud of myself for getting that plastic tray. It held all my inks nicely and I even arranged them by height. Then of course more bottles came and now it looks like a scene from a bangketa. I do like that little craft box though. It’s supposed to be for CD’s but the stuff fit so snugly.

And the center of it all. I have no words. Looking at this picture, I have no idea how I get work done. The inspiration gods have been very, very kind.

I’m using the rocking chair nearby to hold envelopes that are waiting to be packed. Shame on you, mommy. Well Hero never liked it anyway, I say.

Random stuff in a box. I have another box of random stuff under the desk. This holds envelopes that I’ve yet to write on (oh I feel somewhat organized saying that).

I’ve got a little pull-out cubbyhole that houses paper and pens. The top I use as a drying rack / lightbox table. I have this huge bulky lightbox.  I think I should get a slimmer, LED one. But that costs quite a lot. And I’ve got money stowed away but it’s for perming my hair. Maybe I should review my priorities.

And the last part would be the place of pens, washi tape, cords and books and journals everywhere (even on the printer). Oh look, there’s even nail polish. I should have shelves installed. I should. I should.

I’m thinking of having all the wood here lightened to a maple stain. I thought that having it dark would be nice since the ink stains won’t show too much, but sometimes it makes me feel like an old man. I visit Pinterest boards on home offices and it amazes me how other people could have no or very little stuff. Or maybe I’m just really a hoarder, a keeper and a lazy momma.

Any suggestions? Thoughts? Interior design people looking for a challenge?

  1. So timely! Just yesterday I was checking out these immaculate home offices online, but most of them are white! Like, white all over. And it’s never going to work for me. I have a toddler, too, a super spirited little girl (translated to Filipino, it’s ‘malikot’. Haha). Plus I draw and paint so white furniture is definitely a no-no. I admire your resourcefulness, though! Who would’ve thought that rocking chair has other uses? :)

    • Hi Pauline! Oh gosh I envy those home offices. It’s like every corner was followed by a fresh new coat of white. My little girl is a firecracker. She’s like Dora on steroids. I’d love to have light furniture but I think that’s going to have to remain a dream! Oh my “drying rack” is actually a wooden dish rack haha :)

  2. The home office is my biggest frustration. Currently mine is the floor or the dining table, or a coffee shop table somewhere. My dream is to have my own space this year, maybe with a white table with drawers and floral print drawer pulls. I want to finally feel like I belong somewhere and I don’t have to keep going to another room to get my stuff.

For you, I think some containers/frosted plastic drawers would be nice. Muji has some. I also like the idea of the light wood. I think your envelopes would look nice against them in photographs too. :)

    • I used to work on a foldable table (the ones you get at S&R)! I also dreamt of my own clean, organized workspace. Hay! When we moved to a house I thought that I’d get it but lo, chaos just took over.

Now I must think of the hassle of moving stuff out so I could have the furniture repainted. I’m seriously thinking of maple+black+white for the space, if not the whole house :)

  3. I doubt anyone has a clean workstation. Mine started out as immaculately clean as it can possibly can, now you can see clutter everywhere haha. By the way, I really love the late mug!

    • This workstation was clean for about 30 minutes tops (as in on the first day we moved in). Haha. The “late” mug has a partner that says “choco” but since I don’t like chocolate, I never use that other one. LOL.

  4. This is why I love working on the floor. Then I have everything kept in a cabinet which my husband does not dare open since random things just fall randomly. But I love your workstation, it shouts “handmade and hardwork”. :)

  5. I love you. When I start creating, my workspace quickly ends up looking just like this :) I tidy up in between, but when I work – I work messy as hell. Glad to see I’m not the only one, blogland makes it seem that everyone is super-organized… :)

    • LOL! I don’t even get to tidy in between. I try to “segregate” but all in all, it’s still just one big mess :P
